Lessons From Nature

I’ve just returned from a week out in Colorado, spending time in Denver, Boulder, Golden, Evergreen, Colorado Springs, and Manitou Springs and hiking the Flat Irons, Red Rocks and Garden of the Gods. I was surrounded by Nature’s bounty and cognizant that it held lessons for me.

I was stunned by the massive beauty of the mountains, their layers containing the story of their experiences over millions of years. Their cracks and crevices were on full display, adding to their interest and complexity. The rocks were sturdy, strong, hard and unyielding, yet they were also a lesson in vulnerability. The mountains were willing to expose themselves so I might see them and know them, encouraging me to look inward and do the same, to accept my journey and embrace my so-called “flaws.” Looking at the changes brought by erosion from wind and water, I could see how the mountains had surrendered to these natural forces and allowed them to create beautiful new shapes and features. It reminded me how often I struggle for control against the forces of nature and how much easier it is to accept what comes my way, almost as if I’ve chosen it, and trust that the new version of me will be just as wonderful, if not more so. Violence and tumult propelled some ranges upward as forces collided, and they became a distinct part of the landscape, asking me to allow my own struggles to lift me up and reminding me to stand tall, not shrink in shame.

The rushing creeks tore through formerly dry beds after weeks of rain, bringing new life and changing the ecosystem. I was mesmerized by the water and appreciative of its cooling during the heat of the day. I understood its teaching that there are times of drought, times of abundance and lots of time in between.

Nature revitalizes me; it restores me; it teaches me. I am reminded to be strong and vulnerable like the mountains and go with the flow like the streams. I am reminded that Life is hard enough without me complicating it more. I am reminded of both my significance and insignificance in this world, which felt humbling and left me at peace.
