Addiction

All it takes is a moment,
His eye off the prize,
Not being present,
Not taking the pause.

The HIT!
It comes in unexpectedly,
Catches him off guard,
Sends a thrill down his spine,
And he feels the undeniable urge.

Sneaks off to get it done,
Hides the evidence,
Tells no one,
Denial,
Isolation,
Prime feeding grounds
For dysfunction,
For addiction.

He gives up everything
For one thing,
Instead of giving up one thing
For everything.

Hearts break.
His, Hers.
Pain and suffering.
Addiction.
So powerful.
Just baby steps again.

Sobriety.
So tenuous,
So tentative,
So fragile.
Not his fault, but his responsibility.
Not fair, but his reality.
Not to be tackled alone, but only he can do it.
He is loved.
