Last weekend, my daughter’s college soccer team celebrated their graduating seniors with a special Senior Night presentation and party. Seven girls and their families gathered on the field to be recognized one by one for their participation and performance. My ex-husband, oldest daughter, son-in-law and I stood on either side of our girl to show our support and pride at her hard work and determination. We walked her onto the field and stood for pictures. After the game, there was a feast and sweet gifts from teammates. It was a special time to honor special young women.
As each girl was announced, the families walked over to the coach first for a hug or handshake and a thank you. When it was our turn, the coach gave my daughter a big hug and stage whispered, “Suckiest Senior Night Ever!” We all laughed and I thanked her profusely for her support.
It was indeed a sucky senior night. Gillian was six and a half weeks into an injury that has sidelined her for this season and possibly her upcoming lacrosse season. She’s still in a tremendous amount of pain and still can’t bear weight on that foot due to torn ligaments and tendons, plus some bad sprains thrown in for good measure. She uses crutches or her speedier scooter (though she likes the crutches because she feels like she’s getting “jacked”)! A disappointing day indeed.
But Gillian handled this situation like she does most – with complete awareness, but also with good spirits and a sense of humor. We laughed a lot that day, ate lots of food at the party, then went out to lunch and later to dinner! We followed her example and made the best of a sucky day!
