I’ve gone to the gym regularly since I was 14 years old. I plan my own workouts and complete them alone, though I’ll walk with friends from time to time.
A friend of mine in Denver had been raving to me about a body pump class she takes regularly.
Because I tend to do the same exercises all the time, I don’t feel like I’m getting results anymore.
I did some research and joined a gym that offered a variety of classes. That is not my typical modus operandi, but I felt ready for the adventure!
My classes have women of all ages, though the majority are older, and I enjoy the camaraderie. There’s something about being in those rooms that feels so cozy and safe.
I have found that I look forward to these classes and have added all different types to my schedule. Except the dance ones!
I have lost weight and toned in a way that all of my weightlifting and running and walking haven’t done for me.
Sitting in yoga class one Saturday morning, I thought about how success in that room translates to success in my life.
1. Keep your focus on yourself. If you look at others to compare, you lose your balance.
2. Everyone is doing what they can. Encourage others, but don’t presume they need your help.
3. You have your own mat, but are surrounded by others. Hold onto your individuality and independence, but be a part of something bigger, too.
4. Start and end by settling your mind and checking in with your body. ‘Nuff said!
5. Being in sync is a thing of beauty. Feeling that swing makes you feel connected to others.
6. People move at their own pace and depth. So do you! Let it be!
7. Modify when needed. Listen to your body and do what it needs.
8. Stillness is healing. Relax into it and feel your tensions ease.
9. You may feel some discomfort, but you will make it through. In workouts as in life, there is pain, overwhelm, and difficulty, but you will come through it.
10. When you open up, your body releases tension, stress and toxins. The same is true for your emotions. And heart.
11. Don’t try to suppress your thoughts and feelings. Catch and release.
12. All bodies are capable and beautiful. Hallelujah!
13. All ages are capable and beautiful. Yes!!
14. Comfortable clothes make everything feel better. Truth.
