Heading down to Alexandria for my great niece's 1st birthday, my friend asked me to make time to come for dinner. Pizza and champagne, he pointed out,
would be the perfect end to the week.
It may not be a champagne kind of night, I warned, and said we could pivot if needed. His governmental office was likely to see cuts, if not obliteration.
He assured me that making homemade pizza, with his secret recipe dough and varied toppings, would take care of anything that the week could bring.
As luck would have it, they were saved, for now, as we're all so used to saying, especially my friends and family in the State Department. And so the night was not marred by sadness or fear,
but rather two friends catching up, over garlic mincing and dough rolling.
In fact, it was delightful. A beautiful apartment overlooking the Potomac, where we talked of our kids, his grandkids, our travels, favorite books, teaching jobs, and my brother, his old boss.
Homemade pizza and champagne.
The perfect Friday night.
