This sign made me laugh when I saw it on my walk. It's true that my street has been torn up over the past few years due to various road projects. But it just struck me as funny to imagine signs like that popping up to alert you of upcoming issues. I sent it to a couple I am friends with who have had one setback after another, though keep their humor about it.
It got me to thinking about what it would be like if we did have warnings. About good and bad events. I had more questions than I did answers.
- Would we really want to know if a setback was coming? Would it help us to prepare or even prevent? Would it allow us time to get things tidied up in other areas or do the thing we’d be putting off? Or would we be looking for it everywhere and perhaps causing others? Would we live in fear, not fully?
- Would we want to know a tragedy is coming our way? Could it be prevented or would it be inevitable? Would it be nice to have time to say goodbye? Or would it be painful and frightening?
- How about something good? Would we look for it everywhere and hence, find it everywhere? Or would we blast past the little things, thinking it must be bigger and better? Would it rob us of the joy?
My walk that night went quickly, with my mind turning the questions over and over, dreaming up scenarios and signs. My friend called toward the end and we discussed it, as well, and then brainstormed funny signs we’d like to see. Her husband sent me a great one later that night.
What do you think? Would you like to have literal signs of what’s to come? How specific would you want them? What would be the benefits/drawbacks?
