A Quick Note About Lightning

Lightning here is not to be taken lightly (pun intended). It is severe and strong and I have heard more than a few personal stories of people being struck. Because our classrooms are not contained in a building, but rather are in a long row with front and back doors opening to the outside, our students go outside to get their backpacks, use the bathroom, get a drink, go to the lapa for snack and lunch, see the nurse and walk to specials. When lightning is detected in the area, a siren goes off and we must stay inside until the double siren goes off signaling it’s all clear.

Somewhat related, I’ve spoken to just as many people who have been electrocuted. I don’t think grounding is as commonplace as it is back in the States.
