A Quick Note About TVs

When I purchased a tv yesterday, I had to purchase a tv license. Or licence, as it is spelled here. Anyway, it’s R265, which is $15.44 for the year. You must have a licence before you can buy a tv. And you must renew it every year. When I leave and don’t need it anymore, I have to go to the embassy to cancel!

Why? AI says…”In South Africa, a TV licence is a mandatory annual fee for anyone who owns or uses a television set and is payable to the SABC, the public broadcaster. The annual fee is currently R265, with a slightly higher cost for monthly payments to account for administrative fees. You can pay your licence fee online, at your nearest Post Office, or at various retailers and paypoints. First-time applicants must pay the full annual fee upfront.”

A little research shows that people are getting fed up and not paying their tv licence fee, as much as 86% of tv owners. Businesses must pay per set, too.
