Load shedding used to be the major crisis in South Africa, though lately the water shortage has been more critical. Load shedding is the rotating power outages managed by Eskom, the national utility company. This is done to conserve supply and prevent a total blackout. There is an app that alerts you when your area will be without power.
I have not experienced any load shedding since arriving in Country, though I was warned about it. We have had power outages, but that has been due to storms or problems at the transformer stations.
In speaking to locals and listening to podcasts, I’ve learned that load shedding has become less of an issue as businesses have closed their doors, more and more of the country has moved to solar, and the company is better managing and maintaining their equipment.
