Umhlanga

Umhlanga is located in northern Durban on the eastern coast of South Africa. Umhlanga is a Zulu word meaning “place of reeds,” for the vegetation on the Ohlanga River. It is known for its beaches, lighthouse, pier, promenade and nature reserve. An affluent beach town, I have found it to be relatively quiet and not at all crowded.

The Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve is a 26 hectare parcel preserved in 1980. The 2k walk through forest and across the river leaves you on the shore of the Indian Ocean. Following the promenade to the northern end, you will begin the boardwalk into the reserve. There’s even a little café before you turn off into the forest. This is truly a little slice of heaven.
