Practice Presence

Pause there and rest,
Take a beat,
Come down from the thrill,
The excitement of soaring,
Of showing off your beauty,
Of proving your skill,
Flying high above, unreachable, untouchable,
Getting an overview, a glimpse-
An outsider, you control what we see of you.

Come down now,
Amongst us, those who love you.
What do your eyes behold?
What feelings does your heart hold?
Can you connect, plug in,
Look closely instead of your usual distant glance?
Can you bring into sharper focus
That which you tried to ignore, to deny
From your place up on high?
Can you sit here longer,
Deferring the urge to flit and fly,
Bounce around,
Go anywhere, everywhere,
To get away, zoom out?

Can you tolerate the stillness,
Feel your heartbeat slow,
Feel your body ease?
Pause there and rest,
Take a beat
Come down from the thrill
And find peace.

When you fly again,
Will you have fresh eyes?
Will you keep us in mind?
Will you remember that you belong
And use your powers of flight
To be healthy and strong?

Or will you flit and flee,
In the name of being "free,"
Only to realize-
It is the escapism
That cages your dreams?
